Underwriting Team Leader

Role Summary

The primary purpose of the role is to analyse product performance to ensure positive book growth and to manage the personal lines underwriting team to ensure high service levels and excellent turn-around times in accordance with our business objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities

The day-to-day task will include but not be limited to:

  • To ensure the operational performance on a daily, weekly and or monthly basis in respect of service levels, quality of underwriting, internal processes and policies, staff retention, achieve desirable loss ratio's, corrective action and performance management and appraisals (as and when required).
  • To draw, prepare and analyse weekly statistics pertaining to all products within the personal lines department. This includes:
    • Quotations processed for the week, including conversion ratio;
    • New policies issued;
    • Cancellations processed;
    • Policies re-issued;
    • Retentions;
    • Product loss ratio’s – monthly, treaty year and 12 months rolling;
    • Any other data that may be requested or required to  review;
  • To continuously monitor our products in comparison to market related products to ensure that our rating and covers on all sections within the personal lines department is competitive.
  • Monitor, review and approve renewals monthly to ensure that information is accurate prior to being sent to Brokers.
  • Closely monitor and analyse new business quotations to ensure the required growth is achieved while adhering to our underwriting philosophy.
  • Conduct weekly spot checks on all broker productivity completed by the underwriters.
  • Monitor all amendments completed by the underwriters on a monthly basis and approve all amendments wide of the underwriter’s mandates.
  • Prior to cancellations being processed, investigate each matter on its own merit and ensure that all possible retention action was undertaken to prevent loss of business.
  • In the event of any monthly unpaid premiums, as the Team Leader, ensure that brokers and their respective clients are contacted in an effort to retain business.
  • Develop and maintain excellent customer relationships by building rapport with brokers and clients.
  • Give clear directions and instructions to the underwriters to enable them to effectively carryout their duties.
  • Ensure consistent communication is given by yourself to the underwriters and the Managing Executive should any decisions be made, or concerns raised, and action is required to prevent work not being performed.
  • Review and improve the rating structure and underwriting guideline(s) to ensure that the personal lines product remains competitive within the market.
  • Ensure the underwriters are trained and knowledgeable on the underwriting guidelines, wordings and processes to give correct advice to brokers.
  • Perform data analytics and underwriting audits on all underwriting aspects and provide corrective actions proposals to the Insurer.
  • Ensure that accurate and comprehensive records are always kept in compliance with internal processes and audit standards– voice tags, emails, notes etc.
  • Communicate regularly with your team, and report on any problems, issues or complaints you or the client may have to them.
  • Attend all training and skills development as required by the company from time to time.
  • Any other ad hoc duties that may be required for the smooth running of the personal lines department.
Desired Experience & Qualification
  • FET Certificate in Short Term Insurance (NQF 4, minimum 150 Credits)
  • RE5
  • 3 - 5 Years Personal Lines (Domestic) Insurance experience
  • 2 – 3 Years supervisory / managerial experience
Package & Remuneration
  • Package is a CTC month monthly package, market related and commensurate with experience, qualifications and skill-set.
